Penguin Paradise

On smoothly paved roads (for a change!), we cruise further south, in the direction of Punta Arenas, until the legendary Strait of Magellan appears on the horizon.

The most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean is home to Chile's largest colony of Magellanic penguins (on Isla Magdalena), and hence highlighted as an unmissable stop on our travel itinerary.

After a bumpy ferry ride on the wild waters of the Magellan Strait, we find ourselves encircled by no less than 60000 (monogamous!) penguin pairs.  Navigation on the island follows one simple rule: penguins always have the right of way :)  If Penguin Paradise exists, this is it.

Warning: what follows is an overdose of penguins; because everyone needs a little penguin cuteness once in a while.

Happiness is... a penguin.
Penguins mate for life. Which doesn’t really surprise me, because they all look exactly alike. It’s not like they’re gonna meet a better-looking penguin someday.
