For the first time in three months, we are heading north. Now painfully aware that, with every kilometer, the end of our trip nears.
Our happy cruising on endless deserted roads comes to an abrupt end at the border with Argentina. To our surprise (followed by 4 hours of devastation), half of the Argentine population seems to be on their way back from holidays. The inefficiency of the border officials reminds us of - long forgotten - civilisation, and the administration battles back home in Paris. But we quickly push that thought away for another three weeks.
Argentinian Patagonia does not disappoint. The weather gods, who have been surprisingly gentle the last couple of weeks (this is Patagonia after all!), are taking a break and our Perito Moreno visit is wet, verrrry wet. But you know what, glacier blue is at its best in overcast weather, ha!
And that whiskey on-the-glacier-rocks: well-deserved :)
After a warm night (did I mention that a hot water bottle is the most indispensable item for a van-lifer?) on a deserted El Calafate peninsula, the southern sun is back on track; and after the - meanwhile traditional - local mechanic visit, we are too.
The, once again deserted, road to Mount Fitzroy is a feast-for-the-eyes. No, one really does not get tired of these breathtaking mountain vistas and deep turquoise glacial lakes. Laid-back El Chalten is the perfect overnight stop for a lamb asado, and a happy encounter with other VW T3 travellers. We share a laugh, a bottle of wine, and - of course - some mechanical advice!
“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”
